Stop Assuming We Will Vote For Hillary

dnc

Every four years, after one candidate from each Party manages to claw their way to the Nomination, the Parties enter an interregnum phase, commonly referred to as the “Party healing phase” when the Party mends any wounds gained by the nomination process, to coalesce around the nominee.

The scene is the same each year, the runner-up throws their support to the victor, the victor does their best to quell any hesitations the runner-up’s supports may have, (often by including the runner-up in the new administration), and the voters eventually fall in line and vote for the Party’s candidate in the General Election. It is standard campaign/elections 101.

Yet in a year that should have all Political Science professors setting their textbooks on fire, it is presumptuous at best to assume that this year’s interregnum phase is likely to follow the rules.

If the Democratic Nominee is Bernie Sanders, there is no doubt that Hillary Clinton’s supporters will stand behind him, the same cannot necessarily be said if Clinton were to win the nomination.

It is a dangerous move for the Democratic Party to bank on the fact that Bernie Sanders’ supporters will “heal” with the Party and coalesce around Clinton, should she win. What the Democratic Party and the establishment at large do not understand is that Bernie Sanders supporters ARE initiating a revolution and it is a revolution that will continue, whether Sanders gets the nomination or not.

For many people Bernie Sanders has helped open their eyes to the crony capitalistic and blatant corrupt system that we have. For these people the genie is out of the bottle, there is no settling for the lessor of two evils.

There are three types of Bernie supporters whose profiles do not lend well to Hillary Clinton.

1. The First Timers – For many people Bernie Sanders has given them a reason to vote for the first time, never having participated in the political process before. We are not just talking Millennials and high schoolers looking for a free ride to college, we are talking about fully formed adults, seniors even, that have stayed on the sidelines their entire lives through one Presidential race after another, never finding a candidate palatable enough, except for now.

2. The Independents – There are many Independents that have gravitated to Bernie Sanders who have absolutely no loyalties to the Democratic Party and might very well switch to Trump if the match up is Clinton v. Trump. We all know someone who falls into this category.

3. The Real Liberals – Then there are the lifelong Liberal Democrats, who voted along the party line because it was the lesser of the two evils, never satisfied with the Party that continuously puts corporate interests before the interests of the American people.

There are many reasons that these groups are less likely to get behind Hillary Clinton, too many to list. But the biggest reason that some Sanders supporters will never support Hillary Clinton is because no matter how much she tries to sound like Sanders, we know that she has benefited, as much as anyone could, from the system that we are trying to change.

If Hillary Clinton is the Democratic Nominee, the only chance of healing the “Party” is to ask Bernie Sanders to be her running mate. There is no way around it, Sanders can survive without Clinton, Clinton cannot survive without Sanders.

I’ve been voting Democratic for 21 years, but never participated in a primary. I generally considered myself socially and environmentally to the left, and economically to the center. I bought the standard party line, and even after the crash in 2008, I appreciated OWS’s frustration but Wall St. cast enough doubts at the time, that I accepted the idea that the cause was more complex than it actually was. OWS felt like justifiable frustration with no real plan of action.

Bernie’s candidacy certainly jolted me out of my political reverie, and sunce his declaration, I’ve spent many hours each day digging into his policy positions, and broader social and economic issues. It amazes me that I used to find Clinton’s speeches appealing. With so much blatant cronyism on full display in D.C. and a complicit media, I can never take this corporate political establishment seriously again, beyind the threat they pose to a healthy nation that works for all Americans.

As such, I could never in my right mind ever vote for an establishment candidate again. I will never vote out of fear of something worse when better alternatives clearly exist. To continue voting for the status quo will have long-lasting negative repercussions that reaches far beyond our own borders and even our own concerns.

I believe in Bernie Sanders and I am 70. If the truth shall set us free, it means America needs some real old fashioned truth coming from our next President. Clinton and Trump most assuredly do not know the meaning of the word truth. Folks it is that simple! If we are left with a choice of Clinton or Trump for President, then in effect we have no real choice. It will be another dark day in a wonderful nation named America.

I completely disagree that Sanders should be Hillary’s runningmate, and I would hope he would refuse such an offer. Bernie is far more valuable in the Senate where he can continue to caucus with Democrats and use his considerable skills to influence legislation. A Vice President has no power. This would be an incredible waste of his position and sklils to hand off his Senate seat to an unknown.

What *might* make me think better of Clinton would be if she ditches people like her present financial advisor, Gary Gensler – and others of his ilk – in favour of people like Robert Reich and Stephanie Kelton. But as long as she surrounds herself with banksters and war hawks, I still don’t know why I – who vote in a solid blue state – shouldn’t cast my vote for Jill Stein if Clinton is the nominee.

This sort of absolutist brinksmanship is tired. “only chance of healing”. Well frankly , healing doesn’t matter. We’ve moved from monolithic Parties to Individuals, with both good an bad consequences. Dems moved first, and fractured their Party, (Humphrey, McGovern, Dukakis, Gore) while Repubs united behind such criminals as Nixon and W.
This year, the Repubs tried it, with a like disaster. I don’t think this affects the larger voting population however. My view is hindsight, as are all historical views.

Unfortunately, those of us with something in our 401k’s (for which we had no choice, defined benefit programs having been killed almost entirely) have to suck it up and support whichever Dem. The accusations that Hillary is in league with WallStreet is not lost on us, and it has benefits as well as negatives. We know Wall Street will crash our investments when it suits them. We’d rather things remained as stable as possible as long as possible, however.

Those with no money are smart to support Bernie, and I do, just as I support Hillary, like all the people who are concerned about having a retirement. Depending on my mood I will either make it or be homeless/dead.

And, as in all elections, the youth vote will probably be split down the middle more evenly than you can image. Young vigorous people generally do not think of the unintended consequences of individual prosperity. They should just not believe that they will ever get financial security by saving money on taxes, or that their success is relative to their classmates in competition.

If you live in a country where everyone has enough to eat, a decent roof, clean water and a reason to get up in the morning, then your success is your own business. Until then, you need to be supervised by a government.

Hm, a little self-righteous yourself, there. Have you even considered the fact that maybe 45 years of the approach Clinton exemplifies is why we have such a clown car of Republicans and Trump in the first place?

You think Trump is the worst that can happen, but have you thought about what a disaster it has been to have Democrats spend more than four decades passing exactly the right-wing policies we always voted against Republicans in order to stop? Have you asked yourself how much longer the half of the country that is now living in a depression can take it before things explode?

Democrats enabled those Republicans to get as crazy as they are. They didn’t used to *dare* act this way because the Democrats used to get in their face and make them pay for even hinting at that kind of thing. Then suddenly Bill Clinton gets into the White House and liberal activists are told to shush about abortion and stop being so “paranoid” that the right-wing is really after birth control, too. Suddenly instead of it being shameful to deliberately impoverish people and leave lead pipes and paint in housing projects, it’s just Sister Soulja that’s shameful. Suddenly, the excellent New Deal regulations that were put in place to prevent the banks from stealing everyone’s homes and money are overturned – by Democrats! – and, behold, the banks go back to stealing everyone’s homes and money. I have a much, much longer list.

Have fun voting for the Clinton/Blankfein ticket and watch that mania that Trump has set free continue to build. Sanders is probably our only hope of stopping it before it’s too late, but you just sit back and be smug about how you’re so much smarter and more mature than those kids.

There is a reason HRC supporters will stand behind Sanders if he wins the nomination. It is called the veto pen in the White House…For the first time, after sixty failed attempts, the Republican majority Congress was successful and sent the Obamacare repeal to his desk a few weeks ago. He vetoed it. I find it incredulous that the ‘so called’ progressive would risk splitting the ticket and increase the likelihood the veto pen would be handed off to a republican presidency of either Trump or Cruz…
It will be Obamacare dismantled first…then EPA regulations…forget addressing climate change. Followed by repealing the Clean Air/Clean Water Act/Clean Drinking Water Acts …that took Henry Waxman (D) Calif. ten years to get the expansions. You think the policies we want and now have were handed to us on a silver platter? It took hard fights and often years to get the legislation made law…Ted Cruz, if elected, has promised to get rid of the EPA entirely…
Republicans will pack the Supreme Court with conservative ideologues. As much as they pound their chest about adhering to the Constitution, it is their desire to interfere in a woman’ reproductive choice and marriage equality based on their religion and against the Constitution…
If he does not win and you BS supporters are for real…I will believe it when you take that enthusiasm and work to get a Congress that supports your views…

Maybe you’re right. It’s much like everyone said when Bush was elected that he’d be terrible – and he was! But the Republicans also passed Medicare Part D, which was a godsend for many.

And when we finally got a Democrat back in the White House, everyone assured us that he’d undo all that terrible (and largely illegal as well as expensive) stuff Bush had done, like allowing torture, and the non-negotiation clause and the donut hole in Medicare Part-D, and the unlimited checks to contractors in Iraq, and so on. Only he didn’t. Instead, he codified Bush’s crimes in law, he completely ignored the problems with Medicare Part-D, he kept right on using Dick Cheney’s war profiteering friends and bleeding money out of the militar, and on top of all that, he actually stopped the prosecutions of the bankers who had committed criminal fraud and caused the banking crisis.

Of course, no one thought President Bill would pass all those horrible Republican policies, either, but there you are.

How could anyone vote for someone who regards Henry Kissinger, an international war criminal and assassin, as her foreign policy mentor? It boggles the mind. I am loyal to democracy, not to the Democratic Party.

How could anyone NOT vote for Sanders after watching this video? What is Hillary Clinton’s message exactly? Mmmm. Your guess is as good as mine, but it’s probably along the lines of “More of the same…” and “It can’t be done”. When I hear her say “I’ll work for you” a bit of bile comes into my throat. Really, Hillary, really?
